Sextortion

Sextortion is a dirty crime with victims all the way from the person set up to tempt another, to the victim and potentially also their friends and family. The problem comes when the person that you meet online turns out not to be the person they have claimed to be and are you leaving yourself open to sextortion!

Sextortion is a type of revenge porn and it is punishable by law. The best way to make sure you don't become a victim of this type of crime is to never share intimate things online unless you know the person very well.

There are some things you should do to stop being a victim here:

1.  Never send pornographic pictures of yourself to someone, regardless of who they are — or who they pretend to be.
2. Do not open the attachments of individuals you do not know.
3. Switch off your Web cameras and mobile devices when you don't need them.
4. Be mindful that people online will claim to be someone or someone. Videos and photographs are not evidence that an individual is who they claim to be. Pictures can be manipulated or stolen.
5. Be in the know-how. Any material that you create online — whether a text, photo, or video message — can be made public. And if you submit something you have no influence whatsoever of where it goes next.
6. Be willing to ask for help.
